Things to Think About

The movie The Passion of the Christ is difficult to watch. The experience of Jesus' suffering and death are made real in a way not done before. There is no better way to make sense of the story the to go to the Scriptures. The questions and scripture selections below may be helpful as you prepare to view the movie and then wrestle with what you saw.

Before viewing the movie The Passion of the Christ:

Read the account of the Passion recorded in Luke 22.14 – 23.56.

After reading, sit in a quiet place and recall the images that came to mind.

After viewing the movie reflect on these questions:

Did the images you saw onscreen resemble what you had imagined when reading the text? How were different?

What particularly moved you?

How are you called to respond?
(For example, Jesus’ words, "Father, forgive these people! They don't know what they're doing." (Luke 23.34) Jesus is teaching us from the cross, inviting us to come to him to be forgiven. Then we will be able to forgive others. What other lessons can we draw from this story?)

Are you being called to change by your experience of this story?

What parts of yourself do you feel need to be changed?

During the church season of Lent:

Read the other Gospel accounts of the passion:

Matthew 26.14–27.66
Mark 14.1–15.47
John  18.1–19.42

Jesus spoke seven times from the cross. Throughout this Lenten Season reflect on the Scriptures and pray. Try to discern where the Holy Spirit is calling you to be and to whom you are called to give compassion.
